Chapter Seven

It turned out that Jordy was still at home with his parents—sort of. He lived in a self-contained granny flat in his parents’ backyard.

“The housing market sucks.” He grimaced when I asked him his address. “But at least this gives me some independence. There’s a pool and everything.”

He’d told me to park out the front and then ring him on his mobile. Access to the flat was only through a side gate, so there was no door to knock on. I nervously hit the call button and waited.

“Hey. Are you here?” Jordy asked in an upbeat manner.

“Yes. Out the front.”

“Sure thing. I’ll be there in thirty seconds.”

He hung up and I checked my hair again in the mirror. I’d shaved before coming out. I wasn’t sure I would get a kiss, but if he was offering I didn’t want stubble burn to mar his face.

There was a dull thunk outside the car, and I spotted Jordy locking a gate to the side of the house. The thunk had been him closing it, and I watched as he used a key to engage a deadbolt.

It was odd to see him dressed in something other than a work uniform. He’d changed into crisp jeans, a black shirt that wasn’t buttoned all the way up, and a white T-shirt underneath. He’d rolled his long sleeves in a way that screamed casual elegance. I wished I had that style. I’d gone for trousers, not jeans, and my shirt was a russet colour.

I opened the car door and went to step out, but Jordy hurried over and almost dove inside.

“Hurry. Let’s go,” he said in a hushed undertone.

“Why?” I asked urgently, rushing obediently but not understanding the reason.

“Before my mother comes out and wants to meet you.”

“Oh,” I said, stomping a little harder on the accelerator to reverse out the driveway quicker. The first date wasn’t really the time for the “meet my parents.” We were two streets away before I stopped checking my rear-view mirror, expecting some lady to be running down the street behind us, trying to meet her son’s date. I glanced over at Jordy and found him watching me with a small smile on his face.

“You look great,” I blurted before I turned back to the road. I couldn’t believe I had Jordy Reynolds in my car and we were heading on a date.

“So do you,” Jordy said quietly. “I like you in that colour.”

I was notoriously bad at taking a compliment. “You mean it brings out the mud colour in my brown eyes?”

He laughed. “No. Your eyes are beautiful and I see things in them all the time. I have to stop myself from seeing messages that may not be there, and may be the wishes of my hopeful heart.”

“My eyes give you messages?” I asked in confusion.

“Yes,” Jordy said solemnly. “At times I think I see desire there. Sometimes tenderness. But you never say anything and so I think I must be dreaming.”

I was sure there had been desire and tenderness in my eyes on many occasions when I was looking at Jordy.
